In 1959, Vijay Mallya opened the first distillery for McDowell and Company in Cherthala, Kerala, where he began bottling Bisquit Brandy and Dorville French Brandy from imported concentrates. After the import contract for No.1 Bisquit Brandy was cancelled in 1963–1964, McDowell’s No.1 Brandy was introduced as the first product under the McDowell’s No.1 brand. In 1968, McDowell’s No.1 Whisky made its debut, and in 1990–1991, McDowell’s No.1 Rum was released in both a Celebration (dark) and Caribbean (white) variety.
