The upcoming G20 summit is scheduled to take place in Delhi from September 8 to September 10. Preparations are nearing completion, with participation expected from heads of state and senior officials representing various nations. As the summit approaches, stringent security measures have been put in place across Delhi. The city will experience heightened security protocols for the entire three-day event, leading to temporary closures of select Delhi Metro routes and a restriction on unauthorized vehicular access to the New Delhi area. Notably, auto-taxi services will be suspended, and there are plans to close malls and markets in the vicinity. Despite these closures, certain arrangements have been made to minimize inconvenience. Here’s an overview of what to expect in terms of closures and openings during the G20 summit in Delhi.

Alterations in DTC Bus Routes Expected

During the G20 summit, there will be adjustments to the routes of DTC buses and other intercity or private buses. Buses of this kind won’t operate within the New Delhi area. Instead, they will be rerouted to alternative paths. Additionally, buses arriving from external locations will be directed towards the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways. Entry into Delhi will be restricted for all types of goods vehicles, including heavy, medium, and light vehicles. Inter-state buses will have limitations and won’t be permitted beyond the Ring Road. Moreover, no buses will be allowed beyond the Rajokri border.

Continuation of Essential Service Vehicles

Vehicles involved in transporting essential goods will be allowed to operate within the New Delhi area, provided they have obtained the necessary permissions. This exemption will ensure that critical supplies and services remain unaffected by the G20 summit-related restrictions. These authorized vehicles will play a crucial role in maintaining the seamless flow of essential commodities, contributing to the uninterrupted functioning of vital sectors during this period.

Suspension of Auto-Taxi Services

Auto-rickshaws and taxis will be temporarily suspended from operation within the New Delhi district throughout the G20 summit duration. Nonetheless, an exception will be made for guests staying in hotels within the area and local residents who require taxi services. Individuals falling under these categories will be permitted to avail taxi services, ensuring that their essential transportation needs are met despite the general suspension.

Closed Metro Stations

During the G20 Summit, the Supreme Court Metro Station of the Delhi Metro will be non-operational, both for boarding and alighting. Additionally, there’s a possibility of temporary closure for certain other stations such as Khan Market, Mandi House, and Central Secretariat. However, the metro services will remain operational at all other stations and lines, ensuring continued connectivity for passengers throughout the event.

Avoid these routes

There will be no vehicular movement on NH-48 towards Dhaulakuan. All types of goods vehicles, commercial vehicles, interstate buses, local city buses, DTC, DIMTS buses are not allowed on Mathura Road (beyond Ashram Chowk), Bhairon Road, Purana Qila Road and inside Pragati Maidan Tunnel during the event. Uninterrupted Medical Services

Throughout the summit, essential medical and emergency services will be maintained without interruption. A dedicated control room will be established, ensuring round-the-clock availability of helpline assistance. Furthermore, strategic locations will see the deployment of medical emergency vehicles and support personnel. Agile bike teams will also be prepared to establish efficient green corridors, facilitating swift movement when required.

Alternate Routes, Railway Stations Open

All Delhi railway stations will continue their operations throughout the G20 summit. For security reasons, there will be adjustments to the routes leading to New Delhi Railway Station’s Ajmeri Gate side, which will provide direct access from 5 am to 1 am on September 10. Similarly, access to Old Delhi Railway Station will be restricted from the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Road side. Plan your travels accordingly, considering these route changes.

Roads around Rajghat will remain closed

On September 10, all the foreign guests will visit the mausoleum of Mahatma Gandhi. During this time the roads coming within the radius of three-four km of Rajghat can be closed. In such a situation, these routes may be closed.

Closure of Schools and Colleges

In light of the summit, Chief Minister Kejriwal has announced a three-day public holiday. Consequently, all schools and colleges will be shut during this period. From September 8 to 10, due to the G20 summit, a range of entities including banks, financial institutions, commercial establishments, both government and private offices, as well as schools and colleges in Delhi, will remain closed. In accordance with the official notice, banks, financial institutions, and commercial establishments within the New Delhi district will observe closures. Additionally, all government and private offices in Delhi, along with educational institutions including schools and colleges, will also be closed for the duration of the three days.

If you are coming to visit Delhi

If you are planning to visit Delhi between 8 to 10 September, then either postpone this plan for a few days, or visit tourist places located outside the New Delhi area. During the G20, India Gate and all the nearby tourist places may remain closed in terms of security.

What about Hotel-Guest House in New Delhi?

All hotels and guest houses in Delhi will also remain closed during the summit. However, those who have already booked or are staying there will not have any problem.

To alleviate traffic congestion and minimize inconvenience for the general public, the Delhi government has opted to suspend office and school operations throughout the G20 Summit proceedings. Schools may opt for online classes, while offices are encouraged to facilitate remote work arrangements.
